Pattern Instructions
Ribbing:
Ch 7.
Row 1 (RS): Working in back loops only, 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sl st in each ch across. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 2: Working in back loops only, 1 sl st in each of next 6 sl sts. Turn.
Repeat Row 2 until the work from beginning measures 21″ [53.5 cm], ending on a WS row.
Do not fasten off.
Join back seam: Working in back loops only, sl st the last row and the remaining loops of the foundation chain together to form a tube. Do not fasten off. Turn the work and proceed as follows:

Hat Body
Note: Ch 3 at beginning of round does not count as a stitch.
Round 1: Ch 3. Work 40 dc evenly around. Join with sl st to first dc. (40 sts)
Round 2: Ch 3. (1 dcfp around next 3 sts, 1 dcbp around next 2 sts) repeat 8 times. Join with sl st to first dcfp.
Round 3: Ch 3. (1 dcbp around next st, 1 dcfp around next 3 sts, 1 dcbp around next st) repeat 8 times. Join with sl st to first dcbp.
Round 4: Ch 3. (1 dcbp around next 2 sts, 1 dcfp around next 3 sts) repeat 8 times. Join with sl st to first dcbp.
Round 5: Ch 3. (1 dcfp around next st, 1 dcbp around next 2 sts, 1 dcfp around next 2 sts) repeat 8 times. Join with sl st to first dcfp.
Round 6: Ch 3. (1 dcfp around next 2 sts, 1 dcbp around next 2 sts, 1 dcfp around next st) repeat 8 times. Join with sl st to first dcfp.
Repeat Rounds 2 to 6 until hat measures approximately 8″ [20.5 cm] from beginning, ending on Round 6.
Shape Top
Round 1: Ch 3. (1 dcfp around next 3 sts, skip 1 st, 1 dcbp around next st) repeat 8 times. Join with sl st to first dcfp. (32 sts)
Round 2: Ch 3. (1 dcfp around next 3 sts, skip 1 st) repeat 8 times. Join with sl st to first dcfp. (24 sts)
Round 3: Ch 3. (1 dcfp around next 2 sts, skip 1 st) repeat 8 times. Join with sl st to first dcfp. (16 sts)
Fasten off leaving a long end. Draw end tightly through rem sts and fasten securely.

Pompom (Optional)
- Wrap yarn around 4 fingers about 100 times.
- Tie tightly in the center and leave a long end for attaching.
- Cut loops at both ends and trim to form a round shape.
- Sew securely to top of the hat.
