What You’ll Need
- Medium Weight (4) Yarn – 1 ball (approx. 5 oz / 141 g; 240 yds / 219 m)
- Size U.S. H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
- Yarn needle

Size
One size fits most adults
Gauge: 13 sc and 14 rows = 4″ [10 cm]
Abbreviations:
- Approx = Approximately
- Beg = Beginning
- Ch = Chain(s)
- Hdc = Half double crochet
- Rep = Repeat
- RS = Right side
- Sc = Single crochet
- Scbl = Single crochet in back loop only
- St(s) = Stitch(es)
- WS = Wrong side

Instructions
Notes:
- Hat is worked sideways.
- Ch 2 at beg of rows does not count as hdc.
Ch 44, leaving a 24″ [61 cm] long end for seaming later.
Foundation row: (RS). 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook. 1 hdc in each ch to last 5 ch. 1 sc in each of last 5 ch. 42 sts. Turn.
1st row: (WS). Ch 1. 1 scbl in each of first 5 sts. 1 hdc in horizontal bar created below each st in previous row to end of row (bar is below loops normally worked on WS – see diagram). Turn.
2nd row: Ch 2. 1 hdc in horizontal bar created below each st in previous row to last 5 sts. 1 scbl in each of last 5 sts. Turn.
Rep last 2 rows until Hat (at widest point) measures approx 20″ [51 cm], when slightly stretched. Fasten off.

Finishing
Thread end from foundation ch, onto yarn needle and weave yarn through last scbl of each row and gather tightly. Sew back seam. Turn back cuff as shown.
