DIY Crochet Star Keychain Tutorial: Perfect for Handmade Gifts

This little star keychain melts my heart every time I make it! It's such a fun and adorable project, and it doesn't take much time.

I use soft yarn, simple stitches, and cheerful colors to bring it to life. In this post, I'll show you how I crochet this star from start to finish. Let's dive into the steps together!

Materials You’ll Need

Before starting, I prepare all the tools and yarn I need. Here's what I use:

  • Milk cotton yarn in 3 colors: yellow, brown, and pink
  • A 2.5mm crochet hook
  • A small amount of stuffing
  • A stitch marker
  • A yarn needle
  • A keyring

Simple tools, but they create such a sweet result!

Step-by-Step Guide to Crocheting a Star Keychain

This project has two main parts: crocheting both star pieces and stitching them together. I'll walk you through each round and every single detail!

Create the Magic Ring (Round 1)

Let's begin with the magic ring. This is where our little star starts to form. I take my yellow yarn and make a magic ring.

Make a magic ring

Then I chain 1 and crochet 5 single crochet stitches (X-shaped) right into the ring.

Chain 1

After that, I pull the yarn tail to close the ring tightly.

Increase with V Stitches (Round 2)

Now that I have the first round, it's time to increase the stitches and build the shape. I join the round by making a slip stitch into the first single crochet.

Then I chain 1.

In the same stitch, I do a V stitch—that's 2 single crochet stitches in the same space. I always place a stitch marker into the first stitch to keep track.

Make 1 V stitch

Next, I do the same V stitch in each of the remaining 4 stitches around. This gives me a total of 10 stitches in the round.

Alternate X and V Stitches (Round 3)

Let's move on to creating a nice, slightly rounded shape.

I join with a slip stitch, chain 1, then follow this pattern:

Make 1 slip stitch
Chain 1
  • 1 single crochet (X)
Make 1 X
  • 1 V stitch
Make 1 V

I keep repeating this X, V pattern all the way around. It helps the star gradually expand while still keeping a neat form.

Create a 2X–1V Pattern (Round 4)

In this round, I make the final base layer before shaping the points.

I slip stitch to join and chain 1.

Chain 1

Then I repeat this 2-stitch pattern:

  • 2 X stitches
Make 2 X
  • 1 V stitch
Make 1 V

I work this combo around the circle. It gives me a fuller star base, just right for adding the five points next!

Shaping the Star Points

Now comes the fun part—making the star points! Each one adds character to the piece.

Form the First Star Point (Round 5)

To start the first point, I slip stitch into the first stitch to join and chain 1.

Chain 1

In that same stitch, I work the following combo:

  • 1 single crochet (X)
Make 1 X
  • 1 half double crochet (HDC)
Make 1 HDC
  • 1 double crochet (DC)
Make 1 DC
  • 1 half double crochet (HDC)
Make 1 HDC
  • 1 single crochet (X)
Make 1 X

This group forms one point of the star. I love how it rises and narrows—so cute!

Add Slip Stitches Between Points

Before moving on to the next point, I add slip stitches to flatten the area between peaks.

In the next 3 stitches, I make 1 slip stitch in each. This helps define the separation between each point.

Make 3 slip stitches

Repeat for All 5 Points

Now I repeat the same 5-stitch combo for the second point:

  • X, HDC, DC, HDC, X
Repeat the same 5-stitch combo

Then I make 3 slip stitches again.

Make 3 slip stitches

I do this five times in total, forming all the points of the star.

When I finish the last point, I remove the hook and find the first stitch I made (I had placed a stitch marker there).

Make 1 slip stitch

I insert my hook into that stitch and do a slip stitch to close it.

Close the stitch

Then, I pull the yarn through and cut it. I don't need to leave a long tail here.

Cut the yarn

That's the first half of the star done!

Crocheting the Second Star Piece

I make the second star the same way!

Make the second half

The only thing I change is the final step—I leave a long yarn tail on this piece because I'll use it for sewing later. After pulling the yarn through, I sew it to the back like before.

Leave a long tail

Assembling the Star Keychain

Now it's time to bring the two star pieces together! This step is super satisfying.

Prepare for Sewing

I place the two stars with their wrong sides facing each other (right sides out). I ensure the joins—where I ended both stars—are lined up. That keeps the shape nice and clean.

Prepare for sewing

Sew the Edges Together

Using the long tail from the second star and a yarn needle, I sew the two pieces together. I only go through the inner loops of the stitches on both stars.

This gives the edges a soft, clean look. I go around the shape slowly, making sure everything stays aligned.

Sew the edges together

Add Stuffing

Before I sew it all the way closed, I add some polyester stuffing inside.

I use just enough to puff it up gently. I avoid overfilling—it's a keychain, so I want it soft but still flat enough to fit in a bag or pocket.

Stuff the star

Finish Sewing

Once I've added the stuffing, I finish stitching the star closed.

Finish sewing

I weave the remaining yarn tail through the stitches and trim it. The star is now sewn, stuffed, and shaped!

After sewing

Adding the Face Details

It's time to give the star some personality! This is my favorite part!

Sew the Eyes

I take a strand of brown yarn and separate it into two thinner strands (so the eyes don't look too thick).

I hold the star with the seam facing down. On the top portion of the star, I sew two tiny eyes. I keep them symmetrical and spaced evenly for balance.

Sew the eyes

Add Blush

Next, I use a strand of pink yarn to make two small circles below the eyes—these are the blush marks! They're about one row below the eyes and add a super cute expression.

The face turns the star from just a shape into a character. It feels so alive now!

Add blush

Attach the Keychain Ring

To finish, I attach a metal keychain ring to one of the star points.

I slide it through the top point and make sure it sits snugly. Now, I can hook it onto a bag or keys or gift it to someone special.

Wrapping Up

That's how I crochet this adorable little star keychain—from the magic ring to the final smile! It's such a joy to make, especially when I get to personalize the face.
