Materials Needed

  • Multi-shade yarn braid (3.5 oz / 100 g; 127 yds / 116 m) – 2 braids total
  • Size U.S. J/10 (6 mm) and U.S. K/10½ (6.5 mm) crochet hooks or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Stitch marker

Size

One size to fit Adult.


Gauge

12 sc and 14 rows = 4″ [10 cm] with smaller hook.

Notes

  • Before working with multi-shade yarn braid, separate each color link and wind into 5 separate balls for each braid.
  • Each color link will be referenced by its Panton color # (see ball band).
  • Designate each yarn ball Contrast A, B, C, D and E as noted in Materials section (or as desired).
  • Due to finite amount of yarn in each shade, pattern gauge must be matched to ensure successful results.
  • Do not break contrast color, carry color not in use loosely up side of work.
  • Ribbing and Body of Hat are worked sideways.

Ribbing

With A and larger hook, ch 20.

1st row (RS): 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook and each ch to end of chain. Turn. (19 sts)
2nd and 3rd rows: With B, ch 1. Sl st in each st to end of row. Turn.
4th and 5th rows: With A, ch 1. Sl st in each st to end of row. Turn.

Last 4 rows form Stripe Pat.
Cont in Stripe Pat until work, when slightly stretched, measures approx 21″ [53.5 cm], ending with 2 rows of B. Fasten off.


Body of Hat

With C and smaller hook, ch 18.

1st row: 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook. 1 hdc in each ch to end of chain. Turn. (16 hdc)
2nd row: Ch 2 (does not count as hdc). 1 hdc in horizontal bar created below st in previous row (bar is below loops normally worked on WS – see diagram) in each st to end of row. Turn.
3rd and 4th rows: With D, as 2nd row.
5th and 6th rows: With C, as 2nd row.

Last 4 rows form Body Stripe Pat.
Cont in Body Stripe Pat until work from beg, when slightly stretched, measures 21″ [53.5 cm]. Fasten off.

Sew side of Ribbing to Body of Hat.
Sew back seam, reversing 3½” [9 cm] for turn-back cuff on Ribbing.


Crown Shaping

1st rnd (RS): With smaller hook, join E with sl st at Hat seam. Ch 1. Work 57 sc evenly around top edge of Hat. Join with sl st to first sc.

2nd rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in first sc.
Sc2tog. 1 sc in each of next 5 sc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. (49 sts)

3rd rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in first sc.
Sc2tog. 1 sc in each of next 4 sc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. (41 sts)

4th rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in first sc.
Sc2tog. 1 sc in each of next 3 sc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. (33 sts)

5th rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in first sc.
Sc2tog. 1 sc in each of next 2 sc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. (25 sts)

6th rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in first sc.
Sc2tog. 1 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. (17 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long end. Thread end through rem sts. Pull tightly. Fasten securely.
