Materials & Gauge

Finished Size:

  • Banner length: 56″ (142 cm)
  • Each leaf: 4″ (10 cm) wide × 5½” (14 cm) long (including stem)

Gauge: Rounds 1 and 2 = 2″ (5 cm) (Gauge is not critical for this project)

You’ll Need:

  • Yarn: RED HEART® Super Saver®
    • 1 skein each:
      • Color A: Redwood (265)
      • Color B: Medium Purple (528)
      • Color C: Guava (625)
      • Color D: Gold (321)
      • Color E: Coral (726)
        (Note: Only small quantities of each color are needed.)
  • Hook: US H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook
  • Notions:
    • Yarn needle
    • Natural polished hemp cord (Cousin®)
    • Wood bead mix (approx. 60 beads)

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • A, B, C = Color A, B, C, etc.
  • ch = chain(s)
  • dc = double crochet
  • sc = single crochet
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • ( ) = work directions in parentheses into same st
  • [ ] = work directions in brackets the number of times specified
  • * = repeat whatever follows the * as indicated

Special Stitch

Petal = (2 dc, 2 tr, ch 3, slip st in 3rd ch from hook, 2 tr, 2 dc) in indicated stitch


Special Technique

Adjustable-ring method = Wrap yarn into a ring, ensuring the tail falls behind the working yarn. Grip ring and tail firmly between your middle finger and thumb. Insert hook into center, yarn over and pull up a loop. Work first round into the ring, working over both tail and ring. Gently pull the tail to close the ring.


Fall Leafy Banner Pattern

Leaf (make 3 with A and 2 each with B, C, D & E)
Make an adjustable ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, 11 sc in ring; join with slip st in first sc — 11 sc.
Round 2: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in same st as join, 2 dc in each st around; join with slip st in top of beginning ch — 22 dc.
Round 3: Skip same st as join, petal in next st, *skip next st, slip st in next st, skip next st, petal in next st; repeat from * 3 times, skip next st, slip st in next 2 sts, ch 13, slip st in 4th ch from hook and in each remaining ch (stem made), slip st in last st — 5 petals and 1 ch-3 space.
Fasten off.


Assembly

Step 1: Cut a strand of hemp measuring 57″ (145 cm) long. Tie a double knot 9″ (23 cm) from one end.
Step 2: String 5 wooden beads on strand.
Step 3: Inserting strand through ch-3 space, string A-colored leaf.
Repeat Steps 2 and 3 five times, stringing leaves in color sequence as follows: [C, B, E, D, A] twice.
Repeat Step 2 once.
Tie a double knot 9″ (23 cm) from remaining end.

Finishing

Weave in ends.
