How to Paint Blossom Flowers in Gouache Colors

Hi there,

I found doing this painting extremely relaxing! It’s an easy painting that lends a high success rate for beginners.

The pink color of cherry blossoms is soft, delicate, and ethereal. It varies from pale, almost white hues to deeper, richer shades of blush and magenta. The blossoms' pink tones are gentle, evoking a sense of tranquility and fleeting beauty.

In full bloom, the flowers paint the sky with a gentle wash of color, reminiscent of a soft sunrise or the gentle blush of a spring morning. This serene pink is often associated with renewal, hope, and the ephemeral nature of life, making it both beautiful and symbolic.

Displaying a cherry blossom painting in our room or study or work desk helps us feel relaxed after stressful times.

Here, I will guide you step by step to draw a simple cherry blossom painting. Anyone can do it.

Before doing this painting, you should look at many reference photos of cherry blossoms. Observe the shape, color of the flowers and the tree trunk.

HOW TO PAINT BLOSSOM FLOWERS IN GOUACHE COLORS

Step 1: Quick Sketch

I draw on A4 paper, you can change the size as you like. For example A5, A6 paper

Outline the main features in the painting. Including: trees, hills and grass. Trees near are big, distant trees are small.

Step 2: Cover With A Light Blue Layer For The Sky

Fill in light blue horizontally, covering the entire sky.

Use the full width of the brush to paint the sky. Dark green on top, lighter green on the bottom. Apply evenly for a smooth and even base coat.

Step 3: Draw Green Grass

Paint the base layer for the grass hill. Note: the grass near is dark green and the grass far is light green.

Clean the brush and use a damp brush to blend the color. Create a smooth gradient from light to dark.

Step 4: Draw The Flower Stem And Branches

Draw a large tree trunk then divide it into small branches in a “Y” shape.

The base of the tree is large and the branches get smaller. The bushier the tree, the more branches you want.

Use a pointed brush to draw tree branches more easily.

Use brown to draw vertical lines to create texture for the tree trunk.

Use a lighter brown to create a 3D effect for the tree.

Concentrate the light area on the right side, creating the feeling of light shining from right to left.

Step 5: Draw The Flowers

Use a stiff brush to dab pink to create flowers. The dark and light pinks combine to create depth in the painting.

Draw lots of flowers around the tree branches. This is the time to really relax, you can freely dot without fear of drawing mistakes.

Step 6: Create A Bright And Good Patch Of Grass

Paint each blade of grass with a thin brush to add detail and life to the picture.

Use dark green to paint grass on a light background and light green to paint grass on a dark background. Paint small groups of grass and the finer the strokes, the more detail.
