Materials Needed

  • Medium weight (4) yarn – approx. 9.9 oz / 280 g (502 yds / 459 m)
  • 2 crochet hooks: 5.5 mm (I/9) and 6 mm (J/10)
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker

Gauge

15 sts and 20 rows = 4” (10 cm) in split single crochet pattern using smaller hook


Instructions

Note: When working from chart, carry yarn not in use loosely across top of work. Work next row over strand of yarn which is not in use.
Do not join at ends of rounds unless otherwise stated. Continue working in spiral, placing marker on first stitch of round for easier counting.

Ribbing

With A and larger hook, Ch 11

1st row (RS): 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch to end of chain. Turn. (10 sc)

2nd row: Ch 1. Working in back loops only, 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.

Repeat last row until work from beginning, when slightly stretched, measures 19½” [49.5 cm]. Do not fasten off.


Hat Body (Colorwork Section)

Switch to smaller hook and proceed as follows:

Set-up round: Ch 1. Work 80 sc across longer side of ribbing. Do not join. Place marker for beginning of round.

Continue working in spiral as follows: Begin working from chart, noting 2-stitch repeat will be worked 40 times, reading rounds from right to left.

Round 1: 1 splsc in each sc around. Repeat last round, and continue working chart until Round 28 of chart is complete.

Break all colors except B.


Shape Crown

1st round: 1 splsc in each of next 6 sts. Sc2tog. Repeat from * around. (70 sts)

2nd and alternate rounds: 1 splsc in each sc around.

3rd round: 1 splsc in each of next 5 sts. Sc2togspl. Repeat from * around. Join. (60 sts)

5th round: 1 splsc in each of next 4 sts. Sc2togspl. Repeat from * around. Join. (50 sts)

7th round: 1 splsc in each of next 3 sts. Sc2togspl. Repeat from * around. Join. (40 sts)

9th round: 1 splsc in each of next 2 sts. Sc2togspl. Repeat from * around. Join. (30 sts)

11th round: 1 splsc in next st. Sc2togspl. Repeat from * around. Join. (20 sts)

Break yarn, leaving a long end. Thread end through remaining stitches. Pull tightly. Fasten securely. Sew ends of ribbing together.

Pompom (Optional)

Wind 4 strands of color B, and 1 strand each of colors A, C, D, and E around 4 fingers 40 times. Tie tightly in the middle and leave a long end for attaching to hat. Cut loops at both ends and trim to a smooth round shape. Sew securely to top of hat.
